The Twelve Days of Christmas
'Twas the night before Christmas, and all through the house
Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse;
The stockings were hung by the chimney with care,
In hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there.
The children were nestled all snug in their beds,
While visions of sugarplums danced in their heads;
And mamma in her 'kerchief, and I in my cap,
Had just settled down for a long winter's nap,
When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from my bed to see what was the matter.
Away to the window I flew like a flash,
Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash.
The moon shone bright on the snow-covered ground,
Making a pathway for Santa to find his way.
Down the chimney St. Nicholas came with a bound,
Right into the house with his sack full of toys.
He filled all the stockings with candy and toys,
And hung them back on the chimney with care.
Then he turned and gave a wink, and away he went,
Up the chimney and out of sight with a merry "ho ho ho!"
The children woke up early the next morning,
And oh, what a sight they did see!
All their stockings were filled to the brim with toys,
And they were so happy they could hardly speak.
They thanked Santa for all the wonderful gifts,
And then they went downstairs to have a big Christmas breakfast.
It was a merry Christmas indeed,
And one that the children would never forget.
