Food Chain In a food chain, each organism is either a producer, a consumer, or a decomposer. Producers are organisms that make their own food, such as plants. Consumers are organisms that eat other organisms, such as animals. Decomposers are organisms that break down dead organisms, such as bacteria and fungi. The arrows in the food chain show the direction of energy flow. Energy flows from the sun to the producers, then to the consumers, and finally to the decomposers. Here is an example of a food chain: Grass (producer) Grasshopper (consumer) Frog (consumer) Snake (consumer) Eagle (consumer) Bacteria (decomposer) The food chain is a simple model of how energy flows through an ecosystem. In reality, food chains are often more complex, with many different organisms interacting in different ways.
