It was the night before Christmas, and all through the house,
Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse.
The stockings were hung by the chimney with care,
In hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there.
The children were nestled all snug in their beds,
While visions of sugarplums danced in their heads.
And mamma in her 'kerchief, and I in my cap,
Had just settled down for a long winter's nap,
When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from my bed to see what was the matter.
Away to the window I flew like a flash,
Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash.
The moon shone bright on the new-fallen snow,
Making a pathway for Santa to go.
Down the chimney St. Nicholas came with a bound,
Right into the living room with his sack full of toys.
He filled all the stockings with goodies and toys,
Then turned and climbed back up the chimney with a smile.
He sprang into his sleigh and away he flew,
Leaving the children to dream of Christmas Day.
The next morning the children woke up and ran downstairs,
To find their stockings full of presents and toys.
They were so happy and excited, they didn't know what to do.
They thanked Santa for all the wonderful presents,
And then they went outside to play in the snow.
It was a wonderful Christmas, and the children will never forget it.
