Coraline Jones and her parents moved from Pontiac, Michigan to Ashland, Oregon. Their new home was the Pink Palace Apartments, which was in a state of disrepair. Coraline's neighbors were a strange group, including Mr. Bobinsky, Miss Spink, and Miss Forcible. Wyborne "Wybie" Lovat, the grandson of the landlady, was also a neighbor. Coraline met a black cat while exploring the apartment building.
