The Haunted House
It was a dark and stormy night. The wind howled through the trees, and the rain beat against the windows. Inside the house, a young woman sat by the fire, reading a book. Suddenly, she heard a noise. It sounded like someone was coming up the stairs.
The woman put down her book and looked up. The door to her room opened, and a man stepped inside. He was tall and thin, with dark hair and a pale face. He was wearing a black cloak, and his eyes were glowing red.
The woman screamed and tried to run away, but the man grabbed her arm. He pulled her close and whispered in her ear. "Don't be afraid," he said. "I'm not going to hurt you. I just want to talk."
The woman struggled to get away, but the man held her tight. "Let me go!" she cried. "Please!"
The man smiled. "No," he said. "Not until you've agreed to listen to me."
The woman closed her eyes and took a deep breath. "Okay," she said. "I'll listen."
The man released her arm and took a step back. "Thank you," he said. "Now, I want you to listen carefully to what I have to say."
The woman opened her eyes and looked at the man. "What is it?" she asked.
"I'm going to tell you a story," the man said. "It's a story about a house that's haunted by a ghost. This house is different from other haunted houses. The ghost in this house is a friendly ghost. He doesn't want to hurt anyone. He just wants to be friends."
The woman raised an eyebrow. "A friendly ghost?" she asked. "That's ridiculous."
"It's not ridiculous," the man said. "It's true. This ghost is a good ghost. He's just lonely. He wants someone to talk to. He wants someone to be his friend."
The woman thought about what the man had said. She didn't know if she believed him, but she was curious. "Okay," she said. "I'll listen to your story."
The man smiled. "Thank you," he said. "Now, let's begin."
The man told the woman a long and complicated story. He told her about the ghost, and how he had come to be trapped in the house. He told her about the other ghosts that lived in the house, and how they had all been killed. He told her about the time he had saved a little girl from being attacked by a group of bullies.
The woman listened to the man's story in silence. When he was finished, she didn't know what to say. "That's an amazing story," she said finally.
"I'm glad you think so," the man said. "Now, I have a question for you."
"What is it?" the woman asked.
"Do you want to be friends with the ghost?" the man asked.
The woman hesitated for a moment. "I don't know," she said. "I'm not sure if I believe in ghosts."
"That's okay," the man said. "You don't have to believe in ghosts to be friends with them. All you have to do is be open to the possibility."
The woman thought about it for a moment. "Okay," she said. "I'll be friends with the ghost."
The man smiled. "Thank you," he said. "I'm glad."
The man turned and walked out of the room. The woman watched him go, and then she turned back to the fire. She smiled. She knew that she had made a new friend.
