The count's carriage approached the shores of Lake Lachrymose. The water was dark and still, and the only sound was the gentle lapping of the waves against the shore. The count stepped out of the carriage and looked around. He was alone. He took a deep breath and began to walk. The water was cold and refreshing, and the air was filled with the smell of pine trees. The count walked for a long time, until he came to a small island in the middle of the lake. He stepped onto the island and looked around. There was a single tree growing in the center of the island, and a small wooden dock. The count walked over to the dock and looked out at the water. He could see the shore in the distance, but it was too far to swim. The count sighed and turned away. He walked back to the tree and sat down. He closed his eyes and thought about his plans. He had to get across the lake, but how? Suddenly, he heard a noise. He opened his eyes and saw a small boat approaching the island. The boat was rowed by a young woman. The woman reached the dock and tied up the boat. She looked up at the count and smiled. "Hello," she said. "My name is Violet Baudelaire." The count stood up. "I am Count Olaf," he said. "I need your help." Violet looked at him curiously. "What kind of help?" she asked. "I need you to take me across the lake," said the count. "I have an important appointment on the other side." Violet hesitated. "I don't know," she said. "It's dangerous to go out on the lake in the middle of the night." "I'll pay you," said the count. "I'll give you anything you want." Violet thought for a moment. "Okay," she said. "I'll take you across the lake." The count smiled. "Thank you," he said. Violet helped the count into the boat. She rowed him across the lake, and they arrived on the other shore just as the sun was rising. The count thanked Violet and gave her a bag of gold coins. "This is for your trouble," he said. Violet smiled. "You're welcome," she said. "I'm glad I could help." The count turned and walked away. Violet watched him go, and then she turned and rowed back to her island.
