Use planks to direct heated water to melt ice around frozen birds In the winter, birds can become frozen to the ice on ponds and lakes. If you see a bird that is frozen, you can help it by using planks to direct heated water to melt the ice around it. To do this, first find a source of heated water, such as a hot water faucet or a kettle. Then, place the planks in the water so that they create a path from the water to the bird. Once the planks are in place, turn on the water and let it flow over the ice. The heated water will melt the ice, and the bird will be able to free itself. Be careful not to pour the hot water directly on the bird, as this could cause injury. Instead, let the water flow over the ice and gradually melt it. If the bird is still frozen after a few minutes, you can repeat the process. If the bird is still frozen after several attempts, you may need to contact a wildlife rehabilitator for help.
