The largest known carnivorous marsupial of modern times is the Tasmanian devil. This ferocious predator can weigh up to 30 pounds and has a powerful bite that can crush bones. The Tasmanian devil is an ambush predator, lying in wait for its prey before pouncing with lightning speed. Its diet consists mainly of small mammals, but it will also eat birds, reptiles, and insects. The Tasmanian devil is a solitary animal, only coming together to mate. Females give birth to up to 20 young at a time, but only a few of these will survive to adulthood. The Tasmanian devil is listed as endangered by the IUCN, due to habitat loss and a contagious facial tumor disease.
